Turf toe

Turf toe is a colloquial description of a hyperextension injury of the big toe. It is a sprained toe ligament. 

Assessment

Diagnosis is clinical and imaging is not typically done though it makes sense to get an x-ray to check for other causes of toe pain like osteoarthritis or fracture. 

Treatment

Non-pharmacological treatment

Pharmacological treatment

NSAID might help and can be taken routinely or as needed.
